Winners 2021/22

The World Brand Design Society would like to take this opportunity to say a thank you to all students who entered the WBDS Student Design Awards 2021/22. Also, a massive thank you for the dedicated work from educators and educational institutions worldwide for embracing the awards; your support is paramount to the ongoing success of the community awards.

The WBDS Student Design Awards prides it self rigorous multiple rounds of judging; this year is no different with the Judges and Editors having reduced the hundreds of student entry works down to 67 Nominees and then to just 60 winning pieces of work. The winning works include 1 Black, 5 Gold, 17 Silver, 22 Bronze and 16 Commended Awards.

WBDS Design Student of the Year goes to Eliza Tolstika from the Art Academy of Latvia. The WBDS Design Education Institution of the Year goes to HSE Art and Design School in Russia, with their students amassing 53 points from a total of 23 individual awards, these included 2 Gold, 5 Silver, 11 Bronze and 3 Commended Awards, highlighting the students and the institutions exceptional quality of work.

The WBDS Student Design Awards will reopen on the 1st of May 2022 and will continue supporting students, educators and educational institutions. All students can pre register here.

BLACK
MARK WINNERS

This year we have given out just one Black Mark Award to Eliza Tolstika from the Art Academy of Latvia for her Graphic Design for Publication entry. Judges described the work as “An exceptional and delightful explorative piece of editorial work” Eliza wins the title of ‘WBDS Student of the Year’, while picking up a Black and Gold Award, as well as WBDS Scholarship of £2000.

GOLD
MARK WINNERS

Only five students were handed Gold Mark Awards this year, including; Eliza Tolstika from the Art Academy of Latvia, who created a Repetition. Continuation. Discovery, any experimental and interactive editorial design series for Graphic Design for Publication category.

The second winner, Eugenia Kudrinskaya from the HSE Art and Design School category entry for Packaging Design Creation and her work titled Fuji, a design that emphasises the origin of a stunning Japanese soy sauce bottle concept.

In third place, Dominik Dzik, Ryan Boyes, Erin Jones from the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom for their project Packaging Design Creation called Baron's Blood Krelen Rum. The core concept, "The Spirit of the Spirits", uses UV to create a bottle that looks unassuming and clean by day, but at night it comes alive, and the spirits come out to play. The short clip below is well worth a watch.

Fourth place is a stunning sustainable moulded pulp packaging that resembles traditional Chinese teapots, designed by Xenia Alexandrova from Russia's British Higher School of Art and Design. The packaging takes visual cues from regional plantations through the textured patterns around the product.

Tanya Dunaeva fills the fifth-place spot, another talented student from Russia's HSE Art and Design School. She has created an innovative packaging concept exploring gifting vodka called Bloody Mary. This premium vodka is based on the cocktail Bloody Mary, combining two drinks in one container, with additional products in the series called Bloody Margot with cherry liqueur and Bloody Mabel with grape liqueur.
