Winners 2020/21

The World Brand Design Society would first like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who entered the WBDS Student Design Awards 2020/21. To all the talented students, the hard work of the educators and of course all the educational institutions.

The WBDS Student Design Awards 2021/22 will reopen on the 1st of May 2021 and will continue supporting students, educators and educational institutions. All students can pre register
here.

The WBDS team have been overwhelmed with the amount of interest from students from around world, the genuine support and the quality of work has been impressive. However our judges and our rigorous judging process has reduced all the students works down to just 22 pieces of work. This includes: 3 Nominee, 3 Shortlist, 8 Bronze, 6 Silver, 2 Gold and 1 Black Mark Award.

WBDS Design Education Institution of the Year

The World Brand Design Society has given the British Higher School of Art and Design in Moscow, Russia the title of WBDS Design Education Institution of the Year for the exceptional quality of work presented by its students in this year's WBDS Student Design Awards. A big congratulations to everyone involved with the British Higher School of Art and Design, including all students, educators, and the institution's management.

BLACK MARK WINNER

 

This year the Editors have given out just one Black Mark Award to Evgeniya Abramova from the British Higher School of Art and Design in Moscow, Russia for her brand and packaging design for sanitising cleaning products for children and Babies work for “BOO!”. Judges described the work as “An Imaginative piece of brand design that captures your attention and draws your into the finer details” and “A playfully intelligent product range that’s graphically flexible, to be commended”. Evgeniya wins the title of World Brand Design Society Design Student of the Year, while picking a Black and Gold Award, as well as WBDS Scholarship of £2000.

GOLD MARK WINNERS

 

Only two students were handed Gold Mark awards; Evgeniya Abramova created the brand and packaging design for sanitising cleaning products for “BOO! The second winner, a more conceptual entry, explores music and packaging design beautifully. Valeria Obrazkova from HSE Art and Design School in Moscow, Russia creates Jazz Pasta. This project resulted from Valeria being given a task to choose a musical direction and show it on the packaging, choosing her favourite music genre and inspired by poster art from the 1920s. Valeria Obrazkova wins Gold, 2nd Place and WBDS Scholarship of £1000.

SILVER MARK WINNERS

 

Six Student Silver Marks were handed out, with most notable being Kate Zakharova work for ¡VIVA ESPAÑA! Flamenco Festival branding. Kate is a student at the British Higher School of Art and Design based in Moscow, Russia and has created a very simple, but strong new identity system. Kate picked up not only a Silver Award but 3rd Place and WBDS Scholarship of £500.

Thomas Hardwick from Norwich University of the Arts in Norwich, United Kingdom wins an impressive three Silver Awards for his playful packaging design concept for Royal Canin Rebrand, his human rights activists The Freepost campaign and his interesting Epoch Whisky concept. – Richard Williams WMH decribed Royal Canin Rebrand work as ‘‘This has it all. Clever, intelligent ideas that make me chuckle’'.

Iota Display created by Eun Jung Bahng from the ArtCenter College of Design in California, United States. She designed display on a Generative Typography class where she explored digital tools, technologies, and techniques that have the ability to impact typographic form-making, with an emphasis on dynamic, modular, and code-based approaches. Eun Jung Bahng also picked up a second Silver Mark for her work for Unknown Knowns, a book created to help people to identify criminal behaviour. “Wonderful. BRONZE MARK WINNERS

 

Robert Dadashev, another student from the British School of Art & Design based in Moscow, Russia, created a stunning range of packaging for Bashkirian Honey with strong shelf standout. 

Thomas Hardwick from the Norwich University of the Arts in Norwich, United Kingdom wins a Bronze. Thomas adds a Bronze to his already growing collection of three Silver Awards for his work 'Distilled Non-Alcoholic Cornish Spirit Ore'. Many of the jury agreeing that it was a well-presented piece of work. 

Another student collecting awards for fun is  Eun Jung Bahng from the ArtCenter College of Design in California, United States. Eun Jung Bahng previously won two Silver Awards and added this Bronze for her Brand Identity work for Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism International Event. 

Sustainable Packaging Design was brought to the forefront by Jung Jo Hui from Kyonggi University in Suwon, South Korea. Jung Jo Hui made his packaging design concept from one piece of paper; Nest Pack is an eco-friendly fruit basket based upon a birds' nest idea. 

Samantha Krugel from University of Wisconsin Stout, Wisconsin, United States created a usual Spicy Ass Beer humorous beer design crafted with ass-kicking Thai chilli, an exciting product idea and taste profile. 

Although not perfectly aligned with the category of entry Chan Nga Man work caused a stir and delighted many of the juries. The Estonian Academy of Arts student Pot Corn Experimental Accessories pushed a few boundaries. Yet, judges and editors alike agreed that this is to be encouraged. ‘‘Off the wall, bonkers and brilliant’’ – Richard Williams Founder Williams Murray Hamm WMH

Avtaar Dhalliwal created the Ransom Display from Melbourne PolytechnicMelbourne, Australia. The Ransom Display has twenty-six typestyles; these explorative characters were all hand-drawn in creating this personal branding. 

Identity Design Work for Startup Cherub Drop brief was to create a brand for a food drone delivery service that is contemporary, reliable and capturing the thrill of tech. The brand concept is "Good Food. Heaven Sent". Designed by Jeremiah Idanan from Shillington College of Graphic Design in Melbourne, Australia.

SHORTLIST MARK WINNERS

 

Just three student shortlist award were given out this year with the most notable being Jo Hui Jung from Kyonggi University in South Korea with his “Slice condom, structural packaging design concept for slice fruit-flavoured condoms. 

Other shortlist awards include Dasha Danilycheva from HSE Art And Design School in Russia vibrant packaging design for Oilpaint” the Oil Brand for those who treat cooking as an Art. 

Archana Verma, a student from San Diego City College in the United States, created a graphic design editorial layout with stunning front covers for “Entrope” science magazine. “Excellent use of visual cues more recognisable from high-fashion and design publications, applied to a hardcore science publication - execution is superb and very engaging. While this is a 'design for publication' entry, it would have been great to see the design system expanded to digital touchpoints too.” - Jos Harrison Global Head Brand Experience & Design Reckitt Benckiser.
